The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Professor Hafiz Abubakar has called for the establishment of 10 more universities in the state to cater for 60 per cent of qualified candidates seeking for university education in the state.

Professor Abubakar made the remark at the presentation of provisional license to the newly approved Skyline University, Nigeria, Kano State, in Abuja, on Tuesday.

“I have been saying it right away back in 2012 when I was opportune to chair the committee for the implementation of the North West university that Kano State needs the minimum of 10 universities to be able to at least cater for 60 percent of those qualified indigenes seeking for admission”.

He recalled that when he was in Bayero University the time of admission was one of the toughest moments due to the increasing number of qualified students seeking for admission in the state.

He said some programmes in the university in the last three years have defied any criteria put by the university due to high number of qualified candidates seeking for admission in the state.

According to him, state recorded enrolment figure of over 3 million children in basic schools across the states.

He said the state has over 6,000 primary schools and over 7,000 public secondary schools across the states.

He advocates that the country needs private partnership to expand and provide more access to university education.

He said that private university like Skyline University would cater for some percentage of students seeking for university education in the state.

Speaking earlier, the Executive Secretary of National University Commission, Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed described Skyline University as the second private university in the north-western region in the country.

He said “This is the second private university in the north-west in Nigeria but we are not celebrating it because it is private, we are celebrating it becouse it is another Nigerian university.”
