Akwa Ibom APC gubernatorial candidate in April 2015 polls, Mr. Umana Umana, lambastes legal system for alleged election irregularities – Urges Akwa Ibom people to continue to pray for much-desired change in the state and nation.
Mr. Umana Umana, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom has revealed that Udom Emmanuel’s victory in the last gubernatorial elections of April, 2015 is questionable but he trusts in God to provide solace and comfort for the people marginalized by the Nigerian legal system.
According to Premium Times, Umana held that the Supreme Court judgment which presented Edoh Emmanuel as a rightfully elected governor of the state in the April, 11, 2015 polls “calls for very serious soul-searching by our nation”.
In a press statement on Thursday, February 4, Mr. Umana said the Court of Appeal issued an indicting statement in respect to the Akwa Ibom governorship election petition, a statement that must not be overlooked.
Quoting the appeal court statement in respect to Mr. Udom Emmanuel’s election, Mr. Umana said: “May this country never again experience the violence and thuggery found to have taken place in Akwa Ibom State during the Governorship elections held on 11th April 2015.
Mr. Umana added that following the incidence of election irregularity in the governorship poll, the people went to court for justice but were let down by an unfair legal system.
He said: “As law-abiding citizens we went to court to seek justice after the disputed elections, as advised by many people and election monitors, including the United States Embassy and the European Union, which had reached independent conclusions that the elections were marred by widespread irregularities.
“Our hope was that the judiciary would heal the wounds and provide succour for our people who were traumatised and brutalised during the elections, especially the families who lost their loved ones. But that was not to be.”
Mr. Umana expressed confidence in the people particularly the supporters of the APC in Akwa Ibom saying even though the movement for change had been impeded in the state, it will eventually come.
He was optimistic, adding that “no one can stop the march of an idea that has been embraced by the mass of the people”.
He urged the people of Akwa Ibom to remain peaceful and prayerful for the progress of the state and the nation in general.
He added: “We trust God, who is the God of justice, to provide solace and comfort for those who could not get justice within the framework of our legal system.
“Ultimately we would all be accountable to God for our actions.”
